About the Austin Juneteenth Celebration
In 1996, the City of Austin Parks and Recreation (PARD) designated
GEAYA as the official City sponsor of the Annual Juneteenth Celebration.
PARD's collaboration with GEAYA would raise the cultural awareness and embrace the diversity of this historical event for the City of
Austin.
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery.
From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.
In 2000, when Bill Clinton visited Austin, his visit coincided with the Juneteenth events, which mark the emancipation of slaves in Southwestern states roughly two years after the end of the Civil War.
He said Juneteenth ''should be a day for rejoicing, but also for reflection and for reminding ourselves there is still a lot of hardship out there, still a lot of discrimination against people.''
Juneteenth is a celebration of remembrance. This occasion is not only for African-Americans.
It ties in with the community by bringing together people of all ages and all races.
It is a festival of American independence and is a reconciliation intended for all.
Over 15,000 neighbors of all colors gathered along the Rosewood parade route this year on Saturday, June 19, to join in a community gala for
Juneteenth.
One of the many highlights in this years’ parade were the marching bands from as far away as Louisiana ! Afterward, Rosewood Park offered a variety of family enjoyment options.
The community program, following the parade, had such speakers as Congressman Lloyd Doggett and State Comptroller Carol Keeton
Strayhorn.
The two entertainment stages offered concerts featuring several local artists.
Austin Steam Train Co. provided a train ride and tour from the railroad tracks.
A variety of food and information booths were spread throughout the park allowing people to learn the differences in the culture and nature of the historical Juneteenth Celebration on Rosewood Park.
By watching and enjoying the entertainment provided by GEAYA, families became one with their community.
This year we are offering several levels of involvement. Click here for a
